Residents
of Sauka community along the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport road were last
Friday thrown into confusion when a cab driver popularly known as Aki
committed suicide after he was accused of stealing his neighbour's phone
valued at N15,000.
The lifeless body of the 34-year-old man was found dangling near a stream notoriously known as a rendezvous for hard drug peddling and smoking Indian hemp. One of the youths who use the vicinity where Akin hanged himself as Indian hemp smoking den had come early in the morning to smoke when he saw a body dangling from a tree. Seeing the lifeless body of his friend, Akin, he ran to the village to inform the community.
It was gathered that his neighbour, Loveth Chidoke had reported her phone missing and Aki was accused of stealing it.
Chidoke said, "Aki was the only person who entered the compound when I left. Before I came back, he had left the house. I couldn’t run after him because I was half-dressed. He had gone out of the compound. I had always given him the phone which I bought not long ago for N15,000 to charge."
She added that a diviner revealed that Aki was the one who stole the phone and he later confessed to the crime but said he had sold the phone for N5,000 and threw the SIM cards into a river. He was also said to have promised to sell his electronics to refund the money.
Aki, had lived in Abuja for over 10 years and had lived at Sauka suburb for about five years.
The death was later reported at the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Academy located in the area.
Confirming the incident, the chief security officer of the academy, Edwin Ugwuja, an assistant commandant said, "When I came to the office this morning around 7am, I was notified that somebody hanged himself here in the village. I mobilised my men and came to the scene of the incident. As it is, investigation will be carried out. We took his corpse to the Nigerian Air Force Base hospital for confirmation."
